From June 25th 2012 students from science classes around Australia will be competing against the scientists at the HRPPC in an attempt to outgrow and outsmart them. Science students from participating classes will each be given a plant growing kit and a set of minimum growth conditions. Then it is up to the students in collaboration with their teachers to conduct a plant growth experiment and attempt to grow the biggest, greenness Brachypodium plant in Australia. The student who grows the biggest, greenest plant and in the process grows a plant bigger than our scientists will win a major prize for themselves and their school.

Teachers can register their class until the registrations close on the 31st May 2012.

The competition period will run within the period from 25th June to 28th September 2012. Each science class will have 8 weeks within the competition period to complete the growth experiment, not including experimental planning time.

Prizes include

  • the opportunity to join the High Resolution Plant Phenomics Centre in Canberra as a "Student in Residence" for the winning student including travel and accommodation costs,
  • a Canon digital camera for the school of the winning student, and
  • a Plants in Action textbook for the teacher of the winning student.
