What does APPN do?
APPN provides a national network of plant phenotyping solutions and sensors, backed by specialist technical and data expertise, to enable researchers to measure the performance of plants efficiently, objectively and non-destructively over time.
Our capabilities support the science and practice of agriculture including plant breeding, cropping, grazing, horticulture and intensive plant industries.
A national plant phenotyping network
Plant phenotyping accelerates the development of improved crops in a changing climate, to support food security and more productive, sustainable farming systems.
Precisely controlled growth conditions such as soil quality, water and nutrient supply, light and temperature mean researchers can better isolate a plant’s response to those conditions. Researchers can also rapidly test new management methods for later field confirmation.
Digital imaging technologies, machine learning and AI can help to capture, measure and analyse plant responses, so desirable traits can be identified, isolated and propagated more effectively.
By also providing access to field phenotyping infrastructure, APPN enables researchers to study new genetic traits in more dynamic environments and validate the advances for commercial farming systems. This provides a vital link between controlled and real-world environments.
APPN supports this nationally networked infrastructure with dedicated expertise across botany, imaging systems, computer science, machine learning, mechatronics and more.
Our data team enables more effective data management, analysis, storage and sharing through specialist expertise, the application of common standards, and adherence to FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable) data principles.
APPN is funded by the Australian Government’s National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy (NCRIS) along with state governments, industry partners and our host organisations to provide academic and commercial researchers with access to plant phenotyping intrastructure to drive innovation.
